Women right up front! Women of love. Women who do not aspire to anything, therefore, women who can be trusted. Women who know how to love but also how to hate, and certainly women who dare to take the responsibility for their lives.
"Women" were written because of one voice, the voice of Fotini, and because of one verse, the "Red Shoes". The 'red shoes' set up the stage: night, love, women. Thus a cycle of songs came into being. Zeibekiko, chasapiko, ballads - and all these joined together with music which do not simply acts as bridge in-between two songs but also refer to the well-known sound of Nikoloudis.
The arrangement is simple, letting the voice speak, giving to the voice the place of honour, as it should do. Here, the voices do not sing a song, they attest to their lives and that is why the instruments are led at the back of the stage.
When we listen the voice of Fotini Velesiotou it is impossible to remain indifferent. It is a voice which brings to mind the great female singers of the Greek rebetika songs. Her interpretation is Doric and simple, just like the rebetika singers.
And, although Fotini has clarity which gives her the capability to converse directly with the rebetiko songs, into the stage enters Sotiria Leonardou. Sotiria is the Woman. She sings vividly, today, here, now. She participates in the drama of the verses, it seizes her, but, she tames it. She is rock. She opens with her unique rendering of the song 'Women' and somewhere in the middle, she 'Apologises'. An 'apology' which is difficult, tough, with a Sotiria Leonardou taking our breath away.
Sotiria Leonardou is the singer of the songs in the soundtrack "Rebetiko" of the famous Greek composer Stavros Xarchakos, and the leading actress of the homonymous film by Costas Ferris, which gained great international awards.
